I am a Consultant Paediatrician, specialising in Sleep Medicine, within the Children’s Sleep Medicine Department at Evelina London Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. I also practise at Wimpole Street Consulting Rooms and the Giaroli Centre. After completing a fellowship in Paediatric Sleep Medicine in Chicago under Professor Stephen Sheldon 2003, I established the Children’s Sleep Disorder Department where I served as Clinical Lead for over 15 years. We are now one of Europe’s largest paediatric sleep departments and provide a lifespan approach to sleep disorders through transition work with our adult sleep department.
My clinical work includes neurodisability clinics, neurodevelopmental clinics, and specialist services for children with a wide range of sleep disorders.
I am a Professor of Sleep Medicine at King’s College London and over the years, my academic work has covered a broad range of childhood sleep issues, including:
- Epidemiology of normal sleep in UK populations
- The impact of poor sleep on overnight learning
- Sleep disorders in children with Autism and ADHD
- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments
- The use of artificial intelligence in sleep diagnostics
I am currently serving as President of the International Paediatric Sleep Association (IPSA) and I am a board member of the World Sleep Society.
I have contributed numerous scientific reviews, book chapters, and commentaries to popular media, including The Guardian (on children’s sleep) and The Daily Mail (on ‘Bedtime Mode’ for smartphones). My work has been featured in The Sun, where I discussed the health risks of poor sleep, and I’ve been interviewed on BBC Radio 4 and Channel 4’s Bedtime Live.
In addition to my clinical and academic work, I am passionate about communicating science to the public. I have developed several sleep-related apps and regularly engage with schools, the public, and scientific communities.
Outside of my professional life, I’m an aspiring jazz guitarist and proud to have assembled a great hospital-staffed jazz-funk band (although I must admit, there’s no robust evidence of its greatness!).
